KL night market at Lorong TAR closed for rescue operation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Saturday Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman night market in Kuala Lumpur is closed today (Aug 24) for a search and rescue operation, says Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

DBKL stated that the market would be closed to make way for the rescue mission for a woman who fell into a sinkhole at Jalan Masjid India.

“This is also in consideration for the safety of market operators and visitors,” DBKL said in a statement.

Typically, this stretch of road near Jalan Masjid India closes from 5pm until late so that hundreds of hawkers can move in and set up stalls each Saturday.

On Friday (Aug 23) morning, the victim, 48-year-old Vijayaletchumy from South India, was walking with her family when a piece of the pavement near Malayan Mansion caved in, plunging her into the sinkhole.

DBKL added that the Program Santai Seni @ TAR, scheduled for Sunday (Aug 25) has also been postponed.
