Senior docs’ arrest: Health Ministry assures MACC of full cooperation

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry will give its full cooperation to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in the investigation of three senior doctors detained in Penang recently.

The ministry said in a statement Wednesday (Sept 4) it had taken note of the arrests, allegedly linked to a cartel involved in falsifying Social Security Organisation (Socso) disability claims.

“The ministry would also like to emphasise that it will not tolerate any form of power abuse by its personnel and will not hesitate to take appropriate action to ensure that public healthcare services remain at the highest standards,” the statement read.

On Tuesday (Sept 3), MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that two senior doctors from government hospitals and a specialist doctor from a private hospital were among more than 30 people detained in Penang as part of the investigation into the alleged falsification of disability claims.

Earlier Wednesday morning, the three doctors and 30 other individuals, all aged 26 to 60, were brought to court in George Town to be remanded in connection with the probe.
