Marry non-Malays just for votes? Grow up, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: People will be able to judge PAS’s maturity level following a suggestion that members marry non-Malays to increase support for the Islamic party, says Fahmi Fadzil.

“The people will understand and can view the maturity of certain parties which had spoken about the matter.

“You can’t help but smile if this is the level in which they are thinking.

“There are many other issues but this was the issue which was raised,” the Communications Minister told reporters when met after the Minister’s Conversation 2024 held at the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) here on Friday (Sept 13).

Fahmi, who is the unity government spokesperson, was asked to comment on a proposal by Selangor Pas Youth secretary Aubidullah Fahim Ibrahim that members marry non-Malays to increase support.

Aubidullah made the proposal at PAS’s 70th Muktamar in Temerloh, Pahang on Thursday (Sept 12)

He said that mixed marriages would not only win one vote for PAS but hundreds from the non-Malay community.

His remarks have since been condemned by several federal government leaders including Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki who said that marriage should not be used as a political tool.
