MetMalaysia says second heavy rain episode has ended

SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) says the second episode of continuous heavy rain affecting the country ended between 26 and 30 November 2024, following the first episode from 19 to 22 November.

Sinar Harian reported that MetMalaysia Director-General Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said that the latest weather model analysis shows no significant monsoon surge in the coming days that could result in continuous heavy rain.

However, he added that MetMalaysia will continue to monitor weather conditions closely and provide early warnings if there are signs of a monsoon surge.

“Nevertheless, MetMalaysia remains ready to inform the public if there are weather changes that could potentially bring a stronger monsoon surge,” he said.

Mohd Hisham also explained that if a strong monsoon surge occurs, inland areas in western Peninsular states like Perak and Selangor might experience spillover heavy rain from the eastern Peninsula areas.

He said this spillover usually happens due to strong easterly winds from the tropical Pacific Ocean and northeast winds from the Siberian continent.

According to him, the surge brings continuous rain to the eastern Peninsula areas and subsequently affects nearby inland regions.
