Asean chairmanship a chance for nation to showcase leadership ability, says King
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must showcase its ability to lead and determine the direction of Asean as its chairman this year, says His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
The King also urged the government to show its wisdom in preserving diplomatic relations with all quarters.
“With Malaysia as the Asean chair this year, the country must show its ability to lead and determine the grouping’s direction.
“The government must also improve strategic cooperation in tackling regional and border issues,” His Majesty said in his royal address when opening the First Meeting of the 4th Term of the 15th Parliament here on Monday (Feb 3).
Malaysia formally assumed the chairmanship this year. It takes on the rotating chair for the fifth time since Asean was established in 1967.
His Majesty said stern action, through diplomatic notes, laws and defence measures, must also be taken to protect the country’s sovereignty and allow its interests to continue being protected.
“Even if it’s just a coral reef in the middle of the sea,” said the King.
His Majesty said Malaysia must also be firm in upholding principles of peace, opposing violence and oppression.
“The war in Gaza must end immediately and justice must be done,” said His Majesty.
Hamas and Israel reached a deal for a ceasefire in Gaza earlier in January.
