Japan Dental Clinic Has Therapy Dogs To Help Kids Overcome Fear Of The Dentist
Imagine walking into a dental clinic, feeling nervous about your appointment, only to be greeted by a friendly therapy dog, ready to soothe your anxiety.
In a bid to boost business, paediatric dental clinic Palette Clinic located in Japan’s Ibaraki prefecture has introduced therapy dogs to help young patients feel at ease during treatment.
The idea was first sparked 20 years ago when the clinic’s founder Suzuki met Flora, a golden retriever therapy dog.
“Just the warmth of the dogs seems to relax children during treatment,” said Suzuki in an interview with Oricon News.
She was initially skeptical, concerned that the high-pitched sounds of dental tools might frighten Flora, however, a trial quickly proved her concerns unnecessary.
She has since introduced smaller therapy dogs that can comfortably lie on top of kids or between their legs during treatment.
The clinic currently has five dogs on duty.
Even before entering the consultation room, patients can interact with the trained canines in the waiting area.
“Some kids seem to visit me just so they can play with the dogs,” Suzuki laughed.
