‘The Traitors’ Creators Called Out By ‘Mafia’ Game Creator: ‘Not Respecting Other Creators is Bad for Everyone’
The Traitors is being called out by the creator of a retro party game!
In 1986, Dimma Davidoff created the party game that inspired The Traitors along with movies like Cry Wolf and a variety of websites that give their own take on the game.
Now, Dimma is calling out The Traitors for not crediting his creation for their show.
The Traitors is similar to the original Mafia game created by Dimma in that both feature a group of people secretly split into two teams. Each night, the “Traitors” or “Mafia” team vote to kill one person from the “Faithfuls” or “Villagers.” During the day phases of the game, they have to work together to try to vote out the enemy in order to win the game.
On Tuesday (July 1), Dimma spoke to Vulture about the show.
Dimma revealed that he finally watched The Traitors. While he admits the competition show is entertaining, he says the fact that he wasn’t consulted is “disappointing.”
“I tried to contact them through their website portal some time ago but did not get any answer. Of course, they know about the Mafia game,” Dimma said in the interview and went on to explain that he owns a number of copyrights for his game.
According to Dimma, not being contacted by The Traitors creators is a symptom of a larger issue.
He told the publication, “I don’t just say this for myself. It’s a problem because not respecting other creators is bad for everyone. It does not help game designers to create better games. If even a well-known game such as Mafia could be pirated by big organizations, and a young game designer sees this, they think, ‘What chance do I have?’ It sends a message that all of their work is up for grabs.”
