Man gets six months’ jail for assaulting wife in Sibu

SIBU: A man was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court after admitting to assaulting and threatening his wife in April.

Magistrate Romario Jonoi on Wednesday (August 13) imposed a further six-month custodial sentence on 31-year-old Tino Alphonsus for criminal intimidation of his wife.

However, both terms are to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on April 12.

According to the facts of the case, at about 7am on April 11, the victim, who worked at a food outlet in Jalan Chew Hik Hiong 1, was approached by two men seeking to collect a debt owed by her husband.

She subsequently took them to her rented house in Jalan Tiong Hua to meet Tino before returning to work.

Later that evening, at around 9pm, an argument broke out when Tino became enraged that his wife had brought the moneylenders to their home.

During the altercation, he repeatedly slapped her face and head, causing injuries.

The victim, who claimed she had frequently been subjected to violence by Tino, lodged a police report as she could no longer endure the abuse.

Tino was arrested the following day at 5.35pm in Lorong Lai Chee.

Police investigations revealed that, in addition to assaulting his wife, the accused had accused her of infidelity and threatened to kill her.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Haris Danial Mohamed Hassan. Tino was unrepresented.
