Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh was found dead in a hotel bathtub in Malaysia on Oct 22. She was 31.
Malaysian rapper Namewee, 42, has been linked to her death. Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was discovered at the scene. He had reportedly been working on filming a video together with Iris, and they were having a discussion in the hotel room.
Namewee has been charged with two counts of possession and abuse of drugs, but he has since pleaded not guilty to both charges and granted bail of RM4,000 (S$1,240). The police said today (Nov 4) that the case has been reclassified as murder following further investigations, according to a CNA report.
Following Hsieh’s sudden death, Namewee had taken to social media to express his frustration over the ambulance “arriving an hour late”.
“I really don’t know what the 999 emergency hotline is even for. When I called, they even scolded me,” he wrote.
However, according to Malaysian news outlet Chinapress, the Ministry of Health has denied Namewee’s claims.
Officials stated that emergency services dispatched an ambulance within two minutes of receiving the report. They left for the scene at 12.30pm on October 22, and arrived at 12.56pm — taking less than 30 minutes to reach the hotel, not “an hour” as Namewee alleged.
