PDRM Arrests 62 Burmese Men For Allegedly Organising A Large Water Festival In Sepang
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have arrested 62 Myanmar men who are believed to be organisers of a large water festival in Sepang, Selangor
According to Bernama, the festival took place at a workers’ hostel near a glove factory on Monday, 13 April.
Viral footage that spans 34-minutes shows a large crowd of people splashing water at other attendees while dancing to blasting music during the Movement Control Order (MCO), a social distancing measure implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
Sepang police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said among the 62 men arrested, two had admitted to filming the festival and disseminating it on Facebook.
The group was believed to be celebrating Thingyan, a water festival in Myanmar to welcome the new year. The celebration coincides with the Songkran festival, which also falls on 13 April.
The police arrested the group during a raid at 2pm yesterday, following an investigation and cooperation with the factory’s management
“Some admitted to attending the event and more arrests are being carried out to track the other suspects involved. Two mobile phones used by the suspects have also been seized,” said Wan Kamarul.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code, Section 505(c) of the Penal Code, Section 22 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342), and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
