Ada Choi’s Daughter Cured Her From an “Incurable” Disease
Ada Choi (蔡少芬) once described her life’s journey as a miracle, and in the latest episode Chinese variety show Viva La Romance <妻子的浪漫旅行>, she shared her thoughts on why it is.
The 46-year-old actress told her fellow cast mates that she was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis that leads to stiff spine. Severe cases can immobilize the spine, which make it difficult for the person’s chest to expand for breathing. During an acute episode, Ada said she couldn’t even bend at her waist, and had to find compensatory ways to stand up and sit down with her stiff back.
“I could barely breathe,” she said. “The doctor told me that that there’s no cure. It won’t get better. It’ll only get worse. [Severe cases] could make you completely immobile, to the point where you could only sleep standing up.”
When Ada asked the doctor if she would be able to get pregnant, the doctor said, “Yes, but it’ll be a very difficult pregnancy.”
Ada continued, “At the time, I was thinking: I’m only four months into my marriage. I feel like I really owe [Max Zhang] an apology.”
Ada married martial arts actor Max Zhang (張晉) in 2008. Together, they have two daughters and one son.
“I didn’t know what to say,” she said. “It was then when my husband asked the doctor about how to treat it. The doctor said that happiness is the heart’s medicine. Face all setbacks with a happy mind. Then I told my husband, let’s be happy, because we won’t ever know what tomorrow may bring.”
Two years later, Ada and Max welcomed their first born, Zoe. But rather than experiencing the worst, Ada’s waist actually stopped hurting. The OB-GYN at the time told Ada that her daughter had absorbed all of her body’s bone calcium while she was in the womb. It miraculously cured Ada.
“She really is a miracle,” said Ada.
