Anita Yuen Shares Stressful IVF Experience
Hosted by Candice Yu (余安安), Grace Chan (陳凱琳) and Mimi Lo (羅敏莊), TVB parenting show Mama’s Day <日日媽媽聲> premiered its first episode on April 10, with celebrity mom Anita Yuen (袁詠儀) as the first guest star to share her poignant experience with pregnancy.
Anita Spills IVF Journey
As her son Morton grew older, Anita and her husband Chilam Cheung (張智霖) tried hard for a second child but were unsuccessful. Attempting in vitro fertilization (IVF) for several years, Anita overcame the pain of jabs and tests required during the process. It was the emotional pressure of having to wait in limbo for the outcome after every session, which ended with the doctor’s apologetic response each time, that led her to give up on IVF eventually.
Discussing a recent market innovation which allows men to observe their sperm using a home kit and a smartphone, a specialist doctor on the talk show advised that abstaining from sex would worsen the health of sperm. Candice evoked peals of laughter from the audience with her commentary, “So turns out that the concept of ‘conserving your energy’ is wrong,” and Mimi asked, “Is it better if it’s done when you’re energetic in the morning?”
Pro-polygamist Johnny Tang “Punished” by Audience
Former actor, Johnny Tang (鄧兆尊), also appeared on the talk show. In a polyamorous relationship with three girlfriends, Johnny explained he was against marriage due to Hong Kong’s monogamy policy and did not want children due to the pressures of parenting. When Anita asked if his girlfriends would fight over him, Johnny replied that they could request to mutually “exchange” time slots, such as on their respective birthdays, which prompted Mimi to compare this to loaning books from the library.
During the game session on the show, Johnny was asked to make a choice between marriage and sexual dysfunction. The 54-year-old chose the latter, leading to a ruckus on set, after which the audience unanimously agreed to “punish” him by emptying a pail of cold water over his head.
Another guest, actor Joe Yau (游莨維), had once caused a commotion by livestreaming his wife’s labor process. Appearing on set to receive his “punishment,” Joe personally put on the labor simulator machine to experience the pains of childbirth, which made him grimace terribly and sweat buckets on the program. Praising women for their courage in childbirth, he expressed his gratitude to his wife by saying “I love you” through the screen.
Angie Cheong Shared Challenges of Raising Adopted Son
Finally, actress Angie Cheong (張慧儀) also appeared on the episode with her adopted son Hanson, who has congenital heart disease. She shared how she had overcome numerous challenges with him over the years. Hanson also presented a hand-drawn card to her in a touching moment.
