Ruby Lin’s “Light the Night” to Shed Light Into a Murder in Season 2

Produced by and starring Ruby Lin (林心如), Taiwanese drama Light the Night <華燈初上> has soared to the top spot in Netflix Taiwan. The cast also includes Cheryl Yang (楊謹華). Chris Wu (吳慷仁), Joe Cheng (鄭元暢), Jacob Wang (王柏傑),  Tony Yang (楊祐寧), Esther Liu (劉品言), Puff Guo (郭雪芙), Nikki Hsieh (謝欣穎), and Derek Chang (張軒睿).

Set in 1988, the drama revolves around a Japanese-themed nightclub in Taipei run by Rose (Ruby Lin) and her best friend Sue (Cheryl Yang). The two madams are good friends and support each other through thick and thin, but their friendship is constantly put to the test.

While the series is set to have three seasons with 24 episodes in total, the first season has already made its way to Netflix where the audience are introduced to the life and struggles of the nightclub’s madam and hostess. Behind the glitter and politics of the nightclub, the series foreshadows the grisly murder of a woman with red shoes, and takes the audience to the events leading up to the unfortunate crime.

The second season will likely reveal more details of the murder, after the first season ended with a reveal that Sue was the owner of the red shoes. While Sue will likely meet her untimely end, viewers will have to continue to watch to find out if Sue was killed for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or if she was a victim of a lover’s squabble.

In addition, Rose’s relationship will be explored in further details in the second season. Many viewers pitied Rose for wasting her youth on her ex-husband Wu Shao Chiang (Joe Cheng) and going to jail for him. However, instead of cherishing Rose’s effort, he disappeared on her only to resurfaced years later to ask for forgiveness. Will Rose return to her ex-husband or will she move on and fall in love with policeman Pan Wen Cheng (Tony Yang)?

Wallace Huo (霍建華) made a surprising cameo as Ma Tien Hua, Sue’s inmate brother and was well received by audience. While there hasn’t been news that Wallace will reappear in the second season, fans are interested to see how his character will react to the news of Sue’s passing when he gets released from prison.

Finally, Chris’ character in the drama has been a hot topic despite not having made an appearance in the first season. Playing a cross-dressing madam, it is expected that Chris will play a big role as the owner of a competing night club.
