“They Should Stick To Acting”: Joel Chan, Moses Chan, Ruco Chan & Edwin Siu Had A “Disastrous” Time Hosting Miss Hong Kong Pageant

It wasn’t all their fault though. The actors were only informed of the hosting gig a week before the pageant.
The Miss Hong Kong 2023 pageant culminated last Saturday (Aug 27) with hot favourite 21-year-old undergrad Hiliary Chong, who is said to resemble Korean star IU, taking home the crown.
However, the newly-minted beauty queen and accusations about her being two-faced weren’t the only things that got netizens talking.
The night’s emcees, TVB actors Joel Chan, Moses Chan, Ruco Chan and Edwin Siu, were panned for their “disastrous” hosting.
Not only did they constantly flub their lines, they were “stiff” and painful to watch.
Many questioned the choice of hosts, who were “merely reading their scripts” and not interacting with the contestants.
“They should stick to acting,” said one netizen.
Some also felt that while it is refreshing to see new emcee pairings, such prestigious events should be left to the professionals like Eric Tsang and Natalis Chan.

Netizens were also put off by the excessive use of AI elements during the show, saying it felt like they were watching an AI demonstration and not a beauty pageant.

When speaking to media after pageant, Edwin revealed that they were only informed of their hosting duties a week ago and did not have any rehearsals prior to the final.
“Honestly, when we received this job, [we knew] it was going to be a disaster,” he admitted.
As for them flubbing their lines, he joked that things “could have been worse”.
“We are not AI after all,” he said.
Edwin added that though he was only emcee for a day, it felt like a life-and-death experience and that “being able to do it once in a lifetime is enough”.
Moses echoed his sentiments, saying it was “very bold” of TVB to get the four of them, who have never acted together, to host the pageant.
“I really felt like a newbie again. I haven’t felt this nervous and under so much pressure in a long time,” he remarked.
