Peng Soon hopes for strong finish with Yee See in KL Masters after many disappointments

KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttlers Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See’s decision to compete in the KL Masters in a bid to turn around their form is proving to be a masterstroke.

World No. 44 Peng Soon-Yee See stormed into the mixed doubles final after beating Taiwan’s Chen Zhi-ray-Yang Ching-tun 21-10, 22-20 at the Titiwangsa Stadium yesterday.

The pair had been struggling in higher tier World Tour events this year.

Peng Soon-Yee See had suffered early round exits in all their tournaments except the Orleans Masters in April where they reached the quarter-finals.

“Our results have been poor before this,” admitted Peng Soon.

“So, I feel very happy that we managed to reach the final here.

“We felt we had a chance to do well here. Playing at home in front of our fans also made us very motivated.

“This is not a very big tournament but it still gives us some confidence as it has been a long time since we got on the podium together,” added Peng Soon.

The 35-year-old Peng Soon had last reached a final with Yee See in the 2017 Russian Open where the pair had gone on to win their only title together.

Peng Soon-Yee See will take on Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul-Phataimas Muenwong in the title match today.

The Thai duo defeated another Malaysian pair Choong Hon Jian-Go Pei Kee 21-17, 21-17.

“We had been hoping to play Hon Jian-Pei Kee in the final and we are sad that they lost,” said Peng Soon.

“We have never played the Thai pair before and we need to prepare well for the match.

“Personally, I really want to win this title as I want to achieve something meaningful towards the end of my career.”
