Tony Leung Called Disrespectful By Chinese Netizens For Holding Golden Rooster Award Upside Down Backstage

Didn’t know there was a right way to hold that chicken.

It’s been a really fruitful year for Hong Kong film legend Tony Leung.

Not only did the 61-year-old actor win the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in September, he also won Best Actor at the 36th Golden Rooster Awards for his performance in 2023 film Hidden Blade earlier this month.

That win makes him the first male actor to have completed the Best Actor Grand Slam in Asia, which includes Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards,

Sadly, that last win has been sullied by the malice of Chinese netizens, who somehow always seem to have something to complain about.

A video of Tony taken backstage at the Golden Rooster Awards was circulated online.

In the vid, Tony was escorted by an entourage of people as he walked backstage to meet the press. In his hand was his Golden Rooster award.

Turns out, netizens were not happy with how the award was upside down and the rooster’s head was facing the ground.

“This is slightly disrespectful! At least hold it upright. It seems like he can’t be bothered about the award from the way he’s holding it,” wrote one netizen.

Another crowed: “In the Mainland he needs to be respectful and hold his award properly. If he’s overseas then it’s okay. No one cares how he holds his trophy [there].”

Sounds like clucking nonsense to us.
