Father of Ulu Tiram police station attacker charged with supporting Daesh, possessing firearms

KUALA LUMPUR: The father of the Ulu Tiram police station attacker last May has claimed trial at the High Court here to three charges of promoting terrorist ideology, providing support, and possessing firearms related to the Daesh terrorist group.

Radin Imran Radin Mohd Yassin, 62, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him before Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, who then set November 15 for case management.

On the first charge, Radin Imran is accused of knowingly encouraging acts of terrorism by indoctrinating his four children – Radin Luqman, Radin Romyullah, Farhah Sobrina, and Mariah – as well as his wife, Rosna Jantan, with Daesh ideology at a house on Jalan Rabani, Kampung Sungai Tiram, Johor Bahru, Johor, from the end of 2014 until May 17, 2024.

The charge was brought under Section 130JG(a) of the Penal Code (Act 574), which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 30 years and a fine if convicted.

For the second and third charges, he is accused of supporting terrorist activities by possessing four homemade air rifles intended for Daesh activities. He is also charged with pledging allegiance to the leader of the terrorist group, Abu Bakar Al-Baghdadi.

Both acts are alleged to have been committed at the same location at 10:45 AM on May 17, 2024, and at the end of 2014, under Section 130J(1)(b) and Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code.

These sections carry the punishment of life imprisonment or a maximum of 40 years, a fine, and the confiscation of any property used or intended to be used for the offences, if convicted.

Before the same judge, Radin Imran’s daughter, Farhah Sobrina, 23, pleaded not guilty to the charge of deliberately withholding information related to offences under Section 130J(1)(a) and Section 130G(a) of the Penal Code.

She is charged under Section 130M of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of seven years, a fine, or both if convicted.

The prosecution is being led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam, while lawyer Fatima Zulaikha Ahmad Bashri represents both accused.

In the May 17 attack on the police station, two constables, Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, were killed, while Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan, 38, was injured after being shot by an assailant, who was later shot dead in the incident. – Bernama
