Taiwanese star Vivian Hsu had barely recovered from her split with her husband of nine-years, Singapore-based businessman Sean Lee, when she was dealt with another blow.
The 49-year-old recently revealed on Instagram that she was diagnosed with early stages of thyroid cancer following a routine health check at the beginning of this year.
According to Taiwan’s Mirror Weekly, Vivian, who has a nine-year-old son Dalton, struggled to accept the news, questioning: “Why me?”
She was dealing with the emotional toll of her divorce, and the diagnosis felt like an added blow.
But after a brief shock, she quickly arranged to be admitted to the hospital the next day and underwent surgery.
She assured fans that she is “doing well now”’ and that she is “really lucky” to have detected and treated the illness early.
Vivian said she has always been health-conscious and keeps to a balanced diet and exercise routine. However, she has “some hereditary issues” so she makes it a point to get regular health check-ups.
“My child is still young. I will be healthy, so I can accompany him for a long time. Mothers are strong. I won’t be so easily defeated,” she wrote.
Vivian shared that her throat felt numb after surgery and she could not sing for two to three months.
At the doctor’s advice, she has been doing massages and physical therapy to speed up the healing process.
“After my wound healed, I began taking singing lessons. Since the muscles in my throat have shifted slightly, it took some time and repeated practice for me to find the right vocal placement I needed for every song,” she said.
She held performances in Macau in April, a listening party for her latest album ‘It’s My Turn’, and is currently promoting her new film Doubles Match.
She said: “Don’t worry, I’m doing well now! I know you’re all there to catch me no matter what happens, and I’m grateful to all the friends who have showed care for me. Let’s all stay safe and healthy.”
