Budi95: Driver’s licence expired? Here’s how you can renew it online for the RON95 petrol subsidy

With the targeted Ron95 petrol subsidy on the horizon under the Budi95 programme, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has urged the approximately 920,000 motorists with expired driving licences to renew them to ensure they are eligible for the subsidy.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will extend operating hours for renewal counters starting this Saturday (Sept 27), with driving licence and related services available from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekends until October 26.

Alternatively, tech-savvy Malaysians who want to skip waiting in line and prefer a fully digital renewal process can use the MyJPJ app on their smartphones, which allows driving licence renewals of up to 10 years.

It is worth noting that Malaysian motorists with licences that have expired within the last three years can still renew them without issue, while those that have lapsed for more than three years will be required to retake their driving test.

The renewal process

Those who have not yet installed the app can download MyJPJ from both the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store.

Once the app is installed, users will need to open it and register a new account by tapping the green ‘Register New Account’ button on the login screen, entering their MyKad number, and hitting ‘Submit.’ The app will also have an option to toggle between English and Bahasa Malaysia.

When logging in to the newly created account, simply input the MyKad number and password that the account was registered with on the login screen. When logging in to the newly created account, simply input the MyKad number and password that the account was registered with on the login screen.

Following this, users will then need to provide their phone number and email address before being prompted to set security questions for the account. After that, all that’s left is to set a password and confirm it to complete registration.

Users should then navigate from the “Main” page in the app to the “Profile” tab, select the driver’s licence they wish to renew, and then tap on the “Renewal” button.

From there, users select the desired validity period for the renewal, with each year incurring a fee of RM30, then choose a payment method before completing the transaction.

Supported payment methods include credit and debit cards, online banking, and e-wallets. Once payment goes through, the renewal status should be updated in the app soon after.
