Chingmy, Is That Yau? Nope, It’s Her 18-Year-Old Daughter In Her First Cover Shoot

Is it just us, or has there been a lot of buzz surrounding the genetically-blessed offspring of veteran Asian stars lately (see: Andrew Chau, Ella Yam, Mitsuki “Koki” Kimura etc.)?

The latest celebrity mini-me to make waves (again) first caught the attention of netizens when she accompanied her mother to Leo Ku’s wedding a few years ago, and she was soon dubbed “the most beautiful second-generation star” (high praise, considering the “competition”).

We are, of course, talking about Shum Yuet, the eldest daughter of ’90s screen goddess Chingmy Yau, who recently made her magazine cover debut with Elle Hongkong. The 18-year-old shared a bunch of photos from the shoot on Instagram on Monday (Nov 25), and well, all we can say is that Shum Yuet is a total knockout like her mum.

For someone who supposedly has no interest in pursuing a showbiz career (according to Chingmy, at least), Shum Yuet appears to be a natural in front of the camera, posing like a pro and switching effortlessly between cute and high fashion expressions.

Then again, the teen does have some prior experience. Earlier this year, she walked the runway at London Fashion Week for Izzue, a brand under Hong Kong fashion conglomerate I.T, which was founded by her father, businessman Sham Kar Wai. She also travelled to Paris a few months ago for a photo shoot for Le Bal des Débutantes, a debutante ball that’s as atas as it sounds.

Shum Yuet wasn’t always so comfortable being in the spotlight. From May 2017, she stopped updating her Instagram page for almost two years before making her ‘comeback’ in February 2019 with a post of her sashaying down the catwalk in London. Chingmy had also shared that her daughter was unhappy about being stalked by paparazzi and didn’t want all that attention to be on her.

However, with this photo shoot, it looks like Shum Yuet may be slowly embracing the inevitable fame that comes with being a) a gorgeous young thing and b) the doppelgänger one of cinema’s greatest beauties.
