Charlene Choi Talks About Her Illnessjessie tan
Charlene Choi (蔡卓妍) emerged as a big winner at the recent Macao International Film Festival and Awards. She won two Best Actress awards in both the film and drama categories for her work in The Lady Improper <非分熟女> and Police Tactical Unit <PTU機動部隊> respectively.
Taking on more mature and complex roles in recent years, Charlene’s acting gained critical acclaim. On winning Best Actress, Charlene said, “After being in the industry for so long, I’ve had a fair share of nominations and have won awards before. This serves as recognition and affirmation given to me by everyone. However, winning awards is not the reason why I want to try different roles. The only reason why I try my best portraying each character is simply because I love acting.”
Often overworking herself, Charlene’s health has taken a toll. Earlier, Charlene’s swollen face had even prompted pregnancy rumors, but it turns out that the 37-year-old has been suffering from illness.
At first, Charlene thought she only gained weight and consulted a doctor to see if her chin area could be massaged. The doctor concluded that her swollen face was not due to fat tissue, and subsequent MRI results showed that she had lymphatic cysts. Charlene then quickly visited a traditional Chinese doctor to get acupuncture therapy.
Charlene’s manager, Mani Fok (霍汶希), explained that it was very fortunate that her condition was discovered early and she should make a full recovery with the help of both Western and Chinese medicine. Mani said that the condition is manageable and Charlene would still be able to juggle her heavy workload in the upcoming new year.
