Viral Bubble Tea Shop From Jay Chou’s ‘Won’t Cry’ MV Opening in S’pore With $3.50 BBT

Viral Bubble Tea Shop From Jay Chou’s ‘Won’t Cry’ MV Opening in S’pore With $3.50 BBT

It’s a well-known fact that Jay Chou loves bubble tea. The Mandopop star indulges in it so much, he got roasted by netizens for looking a bit, er, fluffy from all that BBT. But who can blame him, when brown sugar pearl milk is just so darn addictive.

He also featured a real-life bubble tea shop called Machi Machi in the music video for his recent hit ‘Won’t Cry’, which predictably went viral. When the brand opened a pop-up in Shanghai, it spawned insane lines with scalpers reselling the drinks at marked-up prices and fans paying people up to RMB350 (S$68) to queue on their behalf.

There are many Machi Machi outlets around the world, including countries like Malaysia, Japan, China and France. While it’s not clear whether Machi Machi is opened by Jay, it is heavily endorsed by the man himself, like what he did for Chinese sarnie chain Liang Sandwich Bar.

He brought JJ Lin to Machi Machi’s Tokyo branch, and occasionally Instagrammed himself guzzling on a cup of BBT. The brand is also apparently named after a pet Pomeranian belonging to Jay’s wife Hannah Quinlivan, with a cute little pooch logo.

Come January 2020, Machi Machi is opening its first franchised outlet in Singapore. It will be located in the Bugis area (8days.sg is unable to reveal the specific address as Machi Machi will be running a social media contest for fans to guess its shop location).

According to the franchise owner, the takeaway outlet will have “no seats”, but will “hopefully” be open before Jay Chou’s upcoming Carnival World Tour concert at the National Stadium on January 10 and 11. While there is no guarantee that you will get to rub shoulders with Jay at the shop, he is known for making surprise visits to his favourite BBT joint. So fingers crossed.

Machi Machi’s hip shops are so Insta-worthy, Jay couldn’t resist an #OOTD pic there.

Once it opens here, it will offer about 19 drinks on its menu with four categories: Machi Freshly Pressed Tea, Machi Cream Foam, Machi Milk Tea and Machi Fresh Fruit. The most famous drink is the one that Jay Chou is said to frequently order: Black Tea with Cheese Foam (pictured, $5.50), which has a thick layer of torched cream cheese foam.

It looks very shiok from his Instagram post:

Jay also posted a photo of himself drinking the caffeine-free Black Tea Latte with Panna Cotta ($7) served in a bottle. A Fresh Strawberry Latte with Panna Cotta version ($7) is also available. Other drinks include Fresh Fruit Jasmine Green Tea ($6.50), Sun Moon Lake Black Tea ($3.50), Tie Kwan Yin Oolong Tea ($3.50) and Brown Sugar Latte ($4.80). You can top up $0.80 for tapioca pearls and mini taro balls for selected drinks.
