Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and wife of prince William, and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex and wife of prince Harry, are often portrayed in the media as two rivalling sisters-in-law. These photographs indicate, however, that this narrative isn’t entirely true…

In her controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle explained that the idea of enmity between her and sister-in-law Kate Middleton is a false narrative. “I think so much of what I have seen play out was this idea of polarity where if you love me you don’t have to hate her, and if you love her, you don’t need to hate me”, she said.

Articles and pictures

For years, the press has been writing about the supposed conflicts and rivalry between the two Duchesses. These numerous articles are often accompanied by photos where Meghan and Kate won’t look each other in the eye and both have a stern, or even annoyed, facial expression. But is it true that the two royal women can’t stand the sight of each other? Meghan says it’s not, but the tabloids still cling onto this narrative. Perhaps that’s why they never use these sweet pictures of the two Duchesses…

1. Affectionate hug

During 2019’s Common Wealth Day service, Kate and Meghan shared a sweet hug. Royal commentator Kristen Meinzer told Insider that is that it’s easy to ‘misread’ this hug. “I’m sure plenty of critics will look at this photo and see a one-armed hug that’s insincere. But what I see is Kate being both gentle and affectionate with her heavily pregnant sister-in-law.” She also notices the sincere smile on Meghan’s face. It’s also important to point out that a formal event such as this normally doesn’t even require embraces. To us, this really looks like the Duchesses are very happy to see each other!

2. Giggling with the Middleton sisters, Wimbledon 2019

Meghan visited Wimbledon with Kate and her sister Pippa Matthews in 2019. In all pictures of this event, the three beautiful brunettes can be seen smiling, giggling and enjoying the tennis games. They seem to have a great time, and there’s no trace of a family feud.

3. Trooping of the colour 2018

During Meghan’s first ‘Trooping the Colour’, she shared a sweet moment with Duchess Kate and Duchess Camilla. Only prince Harry has a serious expression, but the three Duchesses certainly look joyful and at peace.

4. Enjoying Wimbledon together, 2018

Back in 2018, Kate and Meghan also attended Wimbledon together. The photos taken during this lovely summer’s day show the two Duchesses engaged in conversation, smiling at each other and enjoying each other’s company.

Changing relationship

We hardly ever see all these happy moments between Kate and Meghan in the tabloids. Of course, we cannot know what the actual family relationships are like and how the two Duchesses feel about each other. But what we do know, is that we’ll think twice when we hear about a ‘feud’ between the two again.
