TVB Splurges on “Shameless Youth” Filming Set
To add authentic details to the 1980s-based youth drama Shameless Youth <青春不要臉>, TVB splurged on advanced filming technology. On May 20, Dickson Yu (余德丞), Karl Ting (丁子朗), Niklas Lam (林正峰), and Kayan Yau (游嘉欣) filmed their last set of scenes inside the premier studio set equipped with these filming upgrades.
Producer Lincoln Lam (林肯), who was behind last year’s sleeper hit Hong Kong Love Stories <香港愛情故事>, revealed the challenges of filming a drama set 40 years ago. While costumes, indoor sets, and props can be carefully replicated, authentic outdoor street scenes were difficult to reproduce.
Usually TVB would film their car scenes outdoors, but the crew set up LED panels to create moving street background sets, so that realistic driving scenes can also be done inside the studio for Shameless Youth. “This is our newest experiment…. We decided to collaborate with the animations department, as well as a LED wall company to bring out that 1980s feel,” Lincoln said.
The installation setup was not easy, and it came with a hefty price. “What you saw right now is actually just an animation system that we rented. If we purchased the system, we would have to invest around 10 million Hong Kong dollars. Renting it still costs a six-figure sum.”
Lincoln shared that Hollywood was the first to utilize this filming technology, but the it has been around for four to five years now. China has also transitioned to this type of filming technology for two years. “Even though we are just starting now, we hope that we aren’t falling behind. We are satisfied with the results right now.”
According to insiders, the technology is different from the usually green screen technique, and this new system offers many benefits. In addition to minimizing post-production work, it is also easier for actors to be more engaged during filming.
