Owen Cheung Hopes “The Ringmaster” Will Bring Awards

For his role as a professional boxer in The Ringmaster <拳王>, Owen Cheung (張振朗) trained vigorously and dieted for nearly a year. After 10 years in the industry and participating in over 50 dramas, Owen admits that this has been his toughest role to-date.

“Whether it be the physical requirement or the character, it is all new territory for me. The audience always see me portray comedic roles. My character in The Ringmaster is somber, steady, and strong. Hopefully, viewers will see how I am capable of being a diverse actor!”

Since he has many shirtless scenes, the 34-year-old was on a strict workout and dieting regime in hopes of achieving his best physical shape for the drama. In addition to going to the gym six days a week, Owen also strictly ate four to five high protein meals in a day.

Drawing inspiration from actors such as Nick Cheung (張家輝), Eddie Peng (彭于晏), and Louis Cheung (張繼聰) who bulked up for their roles, Owen’s efforts did not go to waste, as he achieved six-pack abs and defined muscles.

Seven days before filming his shirtless scene, Owen started his most demanding prep work. To achieve a state of maximum muscular definition, he drank nine liters of water on the first day, causing him to have to use the bathroom more than 50 times. For the next six days, he consumed less and less water. Recalling the experience, Owen shared, “On the day I had to film a shirtless scene, I could only wet my lips.”

With so much effort placed into the role and the media’s attention, Owen was asked whether he had hopes to win TV King. Although Owen still humbly expressed that he does not have the experience or tenure to receive the award, he also possesses an ambitious side and will nonetheless welcome the opportunity to receive an award and be recognized for his hard work.

“If there really were a chance for me to get the award, then I will definitely remember this important period of my life. I don’t think it is easy to be able to film a boxing drama with TVB and to have achieved such a physical stature. It was a lot of hard work, but I have enjoyed the journey. It is worth it! I will remember this breakthrough for years to come,” Owen said.
