WhatsApp announces new screen sharing feature on video calls

WhatsApp has announced that a new screen sharing feature will be added to the messaging platform.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the update via Facebook on Aug 8: “We’re adding the ability to share your screen during video calls on WhatsApp.”

The feature will be available on WhatsApp desktop and mobile.

The company in a release today (Aug 9) said users can initiate screen sharing by clicking on the ‘Share’ icon and choosing between sharing a specific application or sharing the entire screen.

“Whether sharing documents for work, browsing photos with family, planning a vacation or shopping online with friends, or just helping grandparents with tech support – screen sharing lets you share a live view of your screen during the call,” the company said in its release.

The company also announced that landscape mode is now available for video calls on mobile for a “wider and more immersive viewing and sharing experience”.

According to a report in TechCrunch, the feature has started rolling out on Android, iOS and Windows Desktop in phases. Some users may not be able to see the feature immediately.

The screen sharing feature was first available to some users on WhatsApp beta for Android in May.
