State polls: Election petition, police report to be made over Sg Kandis result

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s Sungai Kandis candidate will file an election petition on the result, citing a discrepancy in the number of missing ballot papers.

It is also learnt that Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) plans to lodge a police report over the same matter.

Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, who was the incumbent, lost by a slim 167-vote margin to Perikatan Nasional’s Wan Dzahanurin Ahmad in Saturday’s (Aug 12) Selangor state polls.

“The total number of missing ballot papers written in Form 14 was 1,964 but only 110 were displayed as the official number (of missing ballots),” AMK communications director Syaril Ali was quoted as saying on Sunday (Aug 13).

“The presiding officer wrote the wrong number.

“Secondly, the Election Commission (EC) did not get a verification from the candidate representative on changes that took place at the vote collection centre.

“The same officer also informed the counting agent that… (it was due to) voters taking ballot papers home, an offence under Section 3 (1) of the Election Offences Act 1954,” he said.

Form 14 is the official statement that summarises election results from a polling station and needs to be signed by the presiding officer.

In a TikTok video he posted on the incident, Syaril is seen asking the presiding officer about the supposedly missing ballot papers and questioning the integrity of the EC officers there.

Mohd Zawawi, who won the seat in a 2018 by-election, obtained 28,759 votes while Wan Dzahanurin received 28,926.

Muda’s Afriena Shaqira Sariff obtained 1,341 votes.
