She has since apologised for her poor singing, but is there really a need to?
With the recent fuss about stars lip-syncing at their concerts, it was vital that stars participating in countdown shows sing live.
Yes, even if they’re actors who aren’t known for their vocal prowess.
Unfortunately for Chinese actress Meng Ziyi, 28, her singing live also highlighted how she can’t carry a tune to save her life.
On Jiangsu TV’s New Year’s Eve show, Ziyi took the stage alongside Ele Yan, Liu Lingzi, Jenny Zeng, Li Hao, and Julius Liu to perform Wakin Chau’s ‘You Make Me Happy and Sad’ (让我欢喜让我忧) with the original singer himself.
There was no doubt Ziyi’s mic was 100 per cent on.
While the other stars had no trouble harmonising with each other during the song’s chorus, one voice — Ziyi’s — stood out from the rest.
She could clearly be heard struggling to hit the right note. She also could not keep to the beat.
Take a listen below:
Clips of her performance made its way to social media fast, with many netizens getting a good laugh.
“There were so many people singing, yet it wasn’t enough to drown out her voice,” wrote one netizen.
Ziyi is well aware that she has become one of the first trending topics of 2024.
She later wrote on Weibo: “Sorry to Wakin Chau-ge, sorry everybody, I really tried my best.” She also added a kneeling emoji, before wishing her followers a happy new year.
“For future countdown shows, can we make an exception for Ziyi and only allow her to lip-sync?” read a hilarious reply.
