Floods: Number of victims in Johor rises to 3,322 people

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has reached 3,322 people, with six districts affected as of 8pm on Sunday (Jan 7).

According to the state disaster management committee, the highest number of victims is at Kota Tinggi, with 1,638 people evacuated from their homes.

“The other affected districts are Kluang with 863 victims, followed by Johor Baru with 733 victims, Kulai with 62 victims, Segamat with 20 victims, and Pontian with six victims.

“The 3,322 victims are from 1,007 families that are currently placed at 45 temporary relief centres (PPS),” it said in a statement.

The PPS with the highest number of victims is at SK Bukit Mutiara in Tebrau, with 254 people, and SK Laksamana in Kota Tinggi, with 243 people.

Nine rivers in the state have also reached a dangerous level, namely Sungai Kahang in Kluang; Sungai Siam in Kulai; Sungai Kepala Orang, Sungai Johor (Kota Tinggi town), Sungai Johor (Rantau Panjang), and Sungai Linggiu in Kota Tinggi; Sungai Tiram, Sungai Skudai, and Sungai Tebrau in Johor Baru.

Meanwhile, Tiram assemblyman Azizul Bachok said that the road leading towards PPS SK Nam Heng was cut off due to a flood, and rescue operations are still ongoing.

“Everything is still under control, and the rescue agencies have managed to get there by boat. We have also sent adequate food aid and other supplies to the victims placed at the PPS.

“This year’s flood is quite serious, as areas that have never been inundated, such as Jalan Atmo in Sungai Tiram, are now flooded,” he said, adding that, as of 8pm, there are 258 victims in Tiram.
