Hold snap polls now to test your support, Dr M challenges Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has challenged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to call for a snap election to test his support among Malaysians.

“During my time, I won elections with a two-thirds majority.

“The people had the chance to throw me out, but they didn’t. I challenge Anwar to call for elections today to see what the people say,” said the former prime minister during a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation on Monday (Jan 22).

He also questioned why authorities had yet to investigate a former Bank Negara assistant governor over a statutory declaration he made in 1999.

24 years ago, Datuk Murad Khalid claimed that Anwar, who was then in the Opposition, had billions stashed in multiple bank accounts.

Dr Mahathir also hit out at the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) for saying that under the Federal Constitution, it lawfully had discretion to initiate or discontinue charges in criminal cases.

“Even our court judges have to give grounds for their judgements sometimes, it is 200 to 300 pages thick.

“But the AGC does not have to give any explanation, even if it is a matter of public interest.

“The people want to know, but the AGC says it doesn’t have to reply. He is higher than the chief justice now,” said Dr Mahathir.
