Anyone who is working on paying off their loans and debts can identify with former Chinese actor Li Yapeng.
The 53-year-old is constantly in the news for his money woes and in 2022 was ordered by the courts to pay 180 million yuan (S$37mil) after being sued by an investment company in 2015.
Known to many as the ex-husband of Chinese singer-actress Faye Wong, Yapeng currently makes a living as a live streamer, hawking items on Douyin.
In a recent livestream, the Eternal Moment actor shared his difficulties repaying his decade-old debts.
“Guys, I’m in so much trouble. I’ve been repaying my debts for almost 10 years. When will I pay them off?,” he cried bitterly.
He also revealed that he had been “eating takeout for a week”, and pleaded netizens to donate towards his living expenses.
Some viewers were so moved that they not only sent words of encouragement, but also virtual cash gifts, bagging him nearly 3,000 yuan (S$517).
Businessman Li Houlin who was also watching the live stream also sent an undisclosed sum via a big rocket emoji.
However, most netizens were not so kind, criticising him for appearing “unmanly” and “pitiful.
Yapeng and Faye reportedly split in 2013 after nine years of marriage due to his mountain of debt.
In 2022, he married to 33-year-old model and former Miss World China contestant Haiha Jinxi, with whom he shares a two-year-old daughter.
