Charmaine Sheh On Getting Fingers Burnt In Stocks

Invited by Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) onto her mainland talkshow Bella & Friends  (transliterated) <嘉人自友約>, actress Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) revealed making a loss of over 200k when she dabbled in the stock market, and having to borrow from friends to fulfil her tax duties!

Painful Lesson Taught Her Importance of Savings

She shared, “When I first entered the industry I heard many financial recommendations, telling me to buy this share and that, so I bought one of them, and when I lost over 200k, I was devastated!”

“That was 1998, I’d put in all the money, and took money from my mom to repay. When tax filing season came around at year end, I was screwed. I can’t ask for money from my mom again, it was too embarrassing, so I borrowed from my friends to pay my taxes. And I stopped buying stocks!” Charmaine said that she learnt her lesson about the importance of savings, and kickstarted the habit of always saving up once she gets new income.

Recalling the time she filmed the award-winning drama War and Beauty <金枝慾孽>, Charmaine recounted how she had difficulties recalling the lines as what the actors spoke would either be decided only on set, or be subjected to spontaneous changes on set.

She shared how she and co-star Bowie Lam (林保怡) coped, “Bowie stuck a script on my back, and I stuck another script on the mirror. I sat in front of the mirror, and he stood behind me, so he would stare at my back, and I would stare at the mirror, because that scene would be spontaneously corrected again, we would not have the time to memorize too well, so we had to (find a way) to support ourselves,”

Her Most Detested Interview Question Is…

When Carina asked Charmaine what was one question she hated getting the most, Charmaine said it would be regarding when she was getting married. “It is annoying, how does it concern you when I’m getting married. If it were friends chatting, you can ask. If it was someone not close to me, my inner dialogue would be “How does it concern you”? Yes, I understand it is out of concern or curiosity, but even if you are asking only once, the person being asked has faced the same question countless times, so I wouldn’t blame (him) if he doesn’t understand, but this is the question I hate the most.”
