MCMC to begin process of appointing second 5G network operator

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been instructed to begin the process of identifying and appointing a mobile network operator (MNO) to develop the country’s second 5G network.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this includes issuing the applicant information package (AIP) on July 1.

He also said the process would be done transparently, based on powers and provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“The Communications Ministry is committed to implementing the government’s decision for the country to transition to a dual network 5G model, to end the monopoly of 5G services, driving a more competitive and sustainable direction for the telecommunications industry.

Fahmi also welcomed the announcement from Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) regarding fulfilment of the conditions precedent for the share subscription agreement (SSA) with CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile and YTL Communications to hold shares in DNB.

“This is one of the key steps towards the transition to a dual network 5G model in Malaysia,” he added.

On Tuesday (June 18), Fahmi said the government remains committed to implementing a dual 5G network policy, as the telecommunications companies involved in the dual network model would complete the equity holding process in DNB on Friday.

He said the development of the second network will only be open to telcos that have completed equity holdings in DNB.
