Nestled discreetly on the first floor of a shop lot in Desa Sri Hartamas is a ‘secret’ restaurant marked only by an unassuming golden calf head on the outside.

Kin Gyu, which has been around for several years now, was designed in a contemporary Tokyo style, resembling a speakeasy with private rooms for an intimate dining experience.

It’s the perfect spot for a date night, family dinner, or any special occasion.

You can expect a wide variety of halal-certified wagyu dishes, including steaks, salads, sushi, sashimi, and hot pot

The wagyu carpaccio features thinly sliced wagyu beef, drizzled with soy sauce and olive oil, topped with yuzu citrus, onions, and seaweed.

Even if you’re not a fan of raw food, this dish might just change your mind.

If you’re looking to balance out the richness of all the meats, the sesame wagyu, watercress, and arugula salad offers a refreshing and flavourful crunch that’s worth trying.

But the star of the show and a must-try is, of course, their wagyu beef flown in from Japan

You’ll be presented with a tray of these marbled delights to choose your meat before it’s grilled.

Unlike other restaurants where you cook your own wagyu, at Kin Gyu, the chefs professionally cook it in the kitchen.

The slices are then served to you with a Mount Fuji lava rock, allowing you to sear them for a few seconds before popping them into your mouth.

The meats come with a slice of lemon, fried garlic, salt, mustard, garlic butter, and a zesty yuzu citrus dip on the side.

While the lemon and dips complemented the meat perfectly, we found that simply sprinkling a little salt on it allows you to fully savour the meat’s natural flavours.

Each slice is generously sized, buttery, creamy, and incredibly delicious.

Another must-try is the wagyu rice bowl that’s perfect for sharing

It comes with its own condiments, which the staff will help you mix together.

You can enjoy this mix on its own or with the provided dashi for a comforting bowl of rice and soup. Perfect for rainy days.

Their sukiyaki stands out with a unique sweetness profile. It includes thin slices of wagyu beef, mushrooms, konjac noodles, grilled tofu, and bread, accompanied by pasteurised eggs for each person.

When the meat and other items are dipped in the raw egg, it cuts through the initial sweetness, offering a creamy and flavourful texture that will pleasantly surprise you.

Here’s a short snippet:

Kin Gyu also offers a selection of desserts and drinks, including both non-alcoholic and alcoholic options

Depending on your order, you can enjoy a hearty wagyu meal here for around RM100 to RM150 per person, excluding drinks.

In addition to the grilled wagyu, we recommend trying their salads, rice bowls, wagyu carpaccio, and sukiyaki for a heavier meal.
