Old School Goodness at Gerai Nasi Eng Kee, Klang
The internet is filled with comments on new and fancy food places that pops up seemingly every other week. While those are great and exciting, I always have special affinity towards those really old school eateries that stands the test of time.
Gerai Nasi Eng Kee, old school as it gets
Gerai Nasi Eng Kee is a stall/shack that has been operating for decades by the old cinema (now Lotus Five Star, specialized in mostly Indian movies) at an area of Klang that’s seen a more glamorous time in the past.
Zinc roof, old plastic tables & chairs, and absolutely sweltering hot under typical Malaysian weather when it’s not raining. The food though, more than makes up for the rather uncomfortable dining location.
oyster sauce roast pork rice
The menu consists of a little over a dozen dishes, roughly half of which were noodle, and the remaining being rice dishes. We tried two of the options here in our two visits so far and they were both excellent.
The oyster sauce roast pork rice (RM 9) is as the title describes – fried roast pork with oyster based sauce that drench the plate of steamed rice, with an addition of vegetable to complete the dish, served with a side of pickled green chili. The ingredients come together rather well, simple, beautiful, and and delicious.
The tofu rice (RM 9) is another traditional rice dish we tried. As with the roast pork dish, this is another one that’s drenched in sauce, but this time it’s not entirely dissimilar to the type you get from a plate of good “wat tan hor”. There’s tofu, carrot, pork, vegetable, with egg drop sauce that ties everything up quite nicely.
Going to find an opportunity to try their noodle dishes next.
