Policeman disciplined for not declaring assets, not over driver assault, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The disciplinary action taken against the policeman suspected of assaulting a disabled ehailing driver was over undeclared assets, says Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

The Inspector-General of Police said the disciplinary action taken was not over the alleged assault.

“It (failure to declare assets) is a breach of the Inspector-General of Police’s standing orders,” he said.

He also claimed it would be “double jeopardy” if the internal investigation for the assault was conducted on top of the criminal probe (under Section 323 of the Penal Code).

The IGP said the investigation paper (IP) over the assault was completed in June and was referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

“However, the IP was sent back to the DPP on July 22 after the police received instruction to investigate the case further,” he said.

Razarudin said further action will be taken against the policeman if he is charged and convicted for the offence.

The IGP had previously said that disciplinary action had been taken against the policeman suspected of assaulting a disabled ehailing driver at a hotel in the city in May following an internal investigation by the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS).

Lawyer N. Surendran, who represented disabled ehailing driver Ong Ing Keong, 48, claimed no action was taken against the suspect after two months.

Ong had lodged a police report that he was assaulted by security personnel escorting a VIP at the hotel near KL Sentral.
