Northeast monsoon expected to start on Nov 5, says MetMalaysia

PETALING JAYA: The Northeast Monsoon phase is expected to start on Nov 5 and continue until March 2025, bringing about five to seven episodes of heavy rainfall throughout this period.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said that during the early phase of the northeast monsoon from November to December, heavy rain is expected to hit Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak, and Sabah.

He added that from January to February 2025, the states more likely to experience heavy rainfall are Pahang, Johor, Sarawak, and Sabah.

“However, if the monsoon surge is strong and at the same time there is a low-pressure weather system, continuous heavy rain can occur in other states across Malaysia.

“Prolonged heavy rain over several days can lead to flooding in low-lying areas and those near rivers.

“If heavy rain continues to coincide with high tide and storm surges, the risk of flooding can become more extreme,” he said in a statement on Friday (Nov 1).

Mohd Hisham added that constant and strong northeastern winds could also lead to turbulent seas, the risk of rising sea levels, and large waves in the South China Sea waters.

Meanwhile, he mentioned that the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia is expected to receive less rainfall towards the end of the monsoon phase from January to March 2025.

“This will lead to hot and dry weather conditions and the potential for heatwaves.

“However, the situation is not predicted to be as severe as in 2024 due to the La Nina phenomenon expected to start at the end of this year and last until the middle of the following year.

“The public is advised to prepare for the monsoon season and to remain alert to information, advice, forecasts, and weather warnings issued by MetMalaysia,” he added.
