Suspect confessed to murdering woman for money to watch football match, say cops
SHAH ALAM: The suspect behind the murder of Nurul Asikin Lan has confessed that he killed her because he needed money.
The suspect, who is currently in police custody, made the confession to Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata, saying he intended to pawn the victim’s gold bracelet and earrings to pay for his way to watch a football match between Malaysia and Cambodia.
This match, part of the Mitsubishi Electric Asean 2024 Cup, took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Dec 8.
The 26-year-old woman’s decomposed body was discovered last Saturday in Tabuan Jaya in Kuching, Sarawak.
“The suspect confessed during questioning, revealing the motive behind the horrible crime.
“The suspect was desperate for cash to attend the football match in Cambodia,” he said when contacted Wednesday (Dec 18), Sinar Harian reported.
“Following the confession to the murder, we believe we are nearing a resolution,” he said.
He added that the suspect also revealed where he disposed of the victim’s body.
During a follow-up inspection at the site, a drain near a rubbish dump in Tabuan Jaya, police found several new pieces of evidence, including clothes, teeth and hair.
“We revisited the site on Tuesday as the body was partially clothed. Our latest examination has brought new evidence to light,” he added.
He confirmed that the body was positively identified as Nurul Asikin Lan.
The police previously received a report about the disappearance of Nurul Asikin Lan on Dec 5, after she was last seen leaving with an acquaintance.
Unfortunately, the victim’s family was unable to identify her remains due to its condition.
