Police investigate effigy incident at July 26 rally

KUALA LUMPUR: A police investigation has been launched after a effigy resembling the Prime Minister was whipped during the rally on July 26.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the incident was detected via a recorded video.

“We will investigate. As I said before, the police will accommodate as the rally is legal under the law, but if there are any wrongdoings, the police will act.

“A police report has been lodged on the incident,” he said during a press conference today at the police contingent headquarters.

He added that police investigations were also opened for the illegal use of drones during the rally.

“We do not allow any drones to be flown over large groups of people. As we all know, drones can also be used for purposes other than photography, and we are concerned they could be used for sabotage.

“That is why on that date, we did not allow the use of drones,” he said.

The rally on Saturday saw thousands of protesters walking the streets to urge Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to step down as Prime Minister over perceived broken promises and rising costs of living.
