Thai, Cambodian PMs welcome Malaysian-brokered peace

PUTRAJAYA: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has expressed hope that the immediate ceasefire achieved in Putrajaya will lead to a return to normalcy between Thailand and Cambodia.

“We had a good meeting and very good results, that (we) hope to stop the fighting that has caused many lives lost and displacement of people.

“We hope that the solutions Prime Minister (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrhaim just announced will set a condition for moving forward for our bilateral discussion to return to normalcy of the relationship and as the foundation for future de-escalation of forces,” he said in a joint press conference after the special meeting at Sri Perdana here on Monday (July 28).

Hun Manet thanked leaders who were involved in the peace efforts, including Anwar, US president Donald Trump and China.

“Cambodia values the efforts of the United States and thank its government for co-organising this crucial meeting in support of peace.

“I also wish to thank the government of China for their efforts and participation in this process in order to achieve the positive outcome today,” he added.

He also expressed gratitude to his Thai counterpart, acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

“I also thank Prime Minister Phumtham for his positive role in the constructive dialogue that we had today, leading to the agreement,” he added.

Phumtham also expressed his gratitude to all parties involved in the peace negotiation.

“Today’s outcome reflects Thailand’s decision for peaceful resolution while continuing to protect our sovereignty and the lives of our people,” he said.

Phumtham offered brief but firm remarks, expressing appreciation for Malaysia’s role and reiterating Thailand’s commitment to peace.

“I sincerely appreciate Prime Minister Anwar and today’s outcome. Thailand remains committed to a peaceful resolution, in good faith, to protect our sovereignty and our people,” he said.
