Immigration Dept detains over a hundred people during ops at Masjid India

KUALA LUMPUR: Over a hundred people were detained following an Immigration Department operation along Masjid India.

Immigration Department enforcement division director Basri Othman stated at a press conference at the scene that 758 people were inspected, with 171 detained for immigration-related offences.

“The majority are from India and Bangladesh, with some from Indonesia.

“There was an instance of foreigners attempting to run away and creating provocations. The rain also hindered our ability to conduct checks outside premises.

“There were also those who obstructed officers from performing their duties,” he said, adding that similar operations will be conducted periodically.

He noted that some tried to pretend to be customers when officers arrived to check.

“Our men have been on the ground since 10am to inspect. This operation resulted from gathered information and complaints,” he said.

He also urged all employers to employ foreigners legally and warned that action will be taken against those found hiring them illegally.
