Alyssa Chia Shares Horrifying Childhood Encounter

HBO Asia’s The World Between Us <我們與惡的距離> was the most celebrated television drama at Golden Bell Awards, winning not only Best Television Series, but also a Best Actress award for Alyssa Chia (賈靜雯).

The World Between Us is a harrowing story about the destruction of a family after the events of a mass shooting. Although Alyssa plays the mother of one of the victims, the actress herself knows what it means to have childhood trauma.

In an interview with the renowned Chinese host Chen Luyu (陳魯豫), Alyssa shared her traumatic childhood experience of almost getting kidnapped. While playing in the playground with her older cousin, an unfamiliar man suddenly pulled her down a few steps and then dragged her to a bathroom while she struggled on the ground. Fortunately, her older cousin was there to save her.

“I was probably around five or six,” said Alyssa. “I remember I couldn’t stop crying, but that’s as far as my memory goes. I do remember my mother saying something about how that man is mentally unstable, that he’s into kids.”

Now a mother of three, Alyssa has come to realize how traumatic that childhood experience was. “Back in the day you didn’t really have that awareness of how serious that actually was. My parents were always working, and kids were just running around freely, but every time I go back to that exact playground [in Taipei], that memory would play back. It’s terrifying memory. Even more frightening for a child.”

But Alyssa also has plenty of bittersweet memories. While touring Taipei with Luyu, Alyssa shared that her father and the owner of Din Tai Fung were high school classmates, and her father used to own a popular restaurant that superseded even Din Tai Fung. However, because of her father’s deteriorating health, he had no choice but to close down the restaurant.
