Family members of Sosma detainees stage hunger strike outside Sungai Buloh prison
SUNGAI BULOH: About 100 family members of 69 detainees of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) have staged a hunger strike opposite the Sungai Buloh Prison here calling for the release of the inmates.
It is learnt that 34 of the Sosma detainees are being held at the Sungai Buloh Prison while the rest are in Alor Setar Prison.
Non-governmental organisation Nambikkai Malaysia National president Datuk Kalai Vanar said the protest was to call on the government to release all the detainees and to repeal the preventive law.
He said the 34 Sosma inmates in Sungai Buloh had commenced a hunger strike on Sunday (July 30).
Former Detainees Welfare Organisation (Popoc) president Ganesan M. Krishnan, who was also present, said the 69 detainees who were held for suspected criminal activities have been in detention between a year and three years.
