But it seems netizens are recently more into low-effort, minimalist live stream e-commerce?

Let’s take a look at new viral Douyin live streamer Zheng Xiang Xiang, who raked in a whopping 100mil yuan (S$18.7mil) in sales in just seven days.

You must be wondering, what makes Xiang Xiang so special?

The live streamer, who perpetually wears a similar black halter dress as the one donned by Chinese actress Gina Jin in 2023 film No More Bets, is known for her deadpan and sped up way of introducing products.

And by that we mean, she  only spends three seconds on each item.

Her routine is: Her assistant passes her a box, she shows the product, states the price and pushes it away. No upselling, no further descriptions, just that.

Honestly, if you blink, you probably would have missed the item completely.

Xiang Xiang’s live streams are also recognised by the piles of Hermès boxes in the backdrop. All the items she sells are placed in the signature orange boxes as well.

Don’t let the atas boxes mislead you though.

Her products sold are said to all be priced below 10 yuan (S$1.9), kinda like Daiso in the past.

Their low price also implies that she had sold approximately ten million units in the past week to have earned the 100mil yuan.

While Xiang Xiang is a fresh face to many, she has actually been in the live stream business since 2017. However, her popularity skyrocketed in the past month.

In the past three days, her follower count has reached over a million, making her the “Dark Horse” of the Douyin e-commerce industry in October.
