Ada Choi’s Husband Suffered Heart Attack During Vacation With The HK Actress & Their Kids

The 51-year-old Chinese actor had to undergo an emergency coronary stent surgery upon arriving home in Hong Kong.

Chinese actor Max Zhang, 51, had a near-death experience in April this year when he was holidaying overseas with his wife, Hong Kong actress Ada Choi, 51, and their three kids Zoe, 14, Chloe, 11, and Le Er, 5.

Max recently opened up about the harrowing incident on reality show Call Me By Fire 2025.

His family of five was out and about when he suddenly felt an intense pain in his chest. He had difficulty breathing, and immediately began cold sweating. He recalled that Ada was queuing up for something around 10 metres away, but due to the sudden, painful onset of symptoms, he was unable to call out for help.

Max felt his body gradually sinking, and his first thought was: “I can’t die here. [Ada] still has three kids with her, what is she to do?”

The responsibility and longing he felt towards his wife and kids was the sole reason for him to hold on, and thankfully, he managed to persevere through the critical moment.

Upon arriving home in Hong Kong after the trip, Max wasted no time in seeking medical help. It was then that the doctor sternly told him that he was in a very dangerous situation, with the consequences being dire if he had delayed seeking help.

Max had to undergo an emergency coronary stent procedure. Recalling the episode, Max confessed: “It was the first time I felt so close to death, [it was as if] I would never see my loved ones again the moment I closed my eyes.”

The brush with death had taught Max to prioritise his family. While he was in recovery, Ada spent every waking moment by his side, preparing all of his meals and making sure that she regulated his intake of oil, salt, and sugar.

His three kids also volunteered to take care of him, and would sing and dance to lift his spirits.

Post-surgery, Max has taken four months to recuperate, and is now focused on the filming for Call Me By Fire. While on the show, he confessed his greatest fear to be leaving the four people he loves most.

While Max has returned to work, his team has maintained that his health will be a priority. Ada, too, has reduced her workload, and is currently spending more time with family.

Max began training in wushu at the young age of nine, and over the years, has taken up jobs as a stunt coordinator and stunt double. His martial arts skills can be seen in shows such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), where he was a stunt double for Zhang Ziyi, and when he starred in Kill Zone 2 (2015).

However, having to perform stunts at a high level has also taken a toll on Max’s body — he had to take a break from work in 2023 after suffering an achilles tendon rupture. He now wears a guard regularly to protect the old injury.
