Ethiopia, Malaysia agree to bring diplomatic ties to greater heights

ADDIS ABABA: Malaysia and Ethiopia have agreed to bring 60 years of its diplomatic relations to greater heights through new areas of cooperation.

This was agreed upon during a meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ethiopia’s President Taye Atske-Selassie Amde.

Anwar said the cooperation between Malaysia and Ethiopia would reach high value sectors such as semiconductors, halal economy, cyber security and other strategic fields that can open new growth for both countries.

“I have also expressed Malaysia’s commitment, through the reopening of our embassy here in Addis Ababa in September, as a recognition of Ethiopia as an important diplomatic hub in the African continent.

“Malaysia also welcomed the establishment of the embassy of Ethiopia in Kuala Lumpur as a move to strengthen the bridge of trust, friendship and cooperation between our countries,” said Anwar.

“May Malaysia and Ethiopia’s relations continue to be strong, with the spirit of true friendship, common confidence that will benefit our people,” he said.

The Prime Minister is in Ethiopia for a three-day visit which ends Thursday (Nov 20).

Earlier, Anwar visited the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum.
