Sigourney Weaver Addresses Age Gap Concerns Over ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Kiss Scene

Sigourney Weaver is shedding some light on the complicated nature of her on-screen romance in Avatar: Fire and Ash involving a much younger actor.

The actress originally played scientist Grace Augustine in the first Avatar movie, but her character died. In Avatar: Way of the Water, it was revealed that Grace’s avatar was used to clone Jake Sully and Neytiri’s adopted daughter Kiri, a 14-year-old hybrid.

Kiri gets a romantic storyline in Avatar: Fire and Ash as she bonds with the character Spider, played by Jack Champion. There is a scene where Kiri and Spider kiss and some have voiced discomfort with the significant age gap between the two actors.

“Obviously I wasn’t going to kiss Jack, who was 14 or 15, in real life,” Sigourney explains to The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview. “We asked Jack to pick someone I could kiss and he did. Then I imagine when I wasn’t there, they picked someone appropriate for Jack.”

She notes that the concern was “legitimate” and so they made an effort to handle it the situation with care off-screen.

“I’m glad the scene survived, because when I saw it, I believed it. It’s so genuine between the two of them and any concern about Jack’s real age and my real age, I think there’s no room for it there,” the Alien actress added.

But she also clarified that outside of that scene, it really was her and Jack acting alongside one another.
