Meesha Garbett, Matilda The Musical’s Red Beret Girl, Reacts To Going Viral
Last month, Netflix dropped a clip from Matilda: The Musical that got an amazing fan response – and it was all because of Meesha Garbett, aka the Red Beret Girl.
The official clips have been viewed a total of 10 million times on TikTok alone, with each receiving at least two hundred thousand likes and thousands of comments, stitches, and duets.
Following the fan reaction to the clip, Meesha, 14, is opening up about the now viral clip and dishing on how she landed the role of Hortensia in the movie.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Meesha revealed that she wasn’t expecting the dance to go viral.
The actress said that she only received a few tags from people who knew her, but then JoJo Siwa commented and it was everything to her.
“When I was young I loved watching Dance Moms with my parents, so my favorite response was from JoJo Siwa,” she said. “I had so many of her bows when I was young.”
Meesha added, “[Every comment] was great to hear and see, but it kept happening over and over. People were loving it and saying the most amazing things.”
While talking about the scene, “Revolting Children”, in the clip, Meesha said that it took days of rehearsals and filming to get it right.
“There was so much going on in the scene around me, like the Flippers and paper airplanes and lots of other things, so we had to go over it many times to get it looking just right,” she shared. “It was also hard traveling so far forward at the same time as dancing and keeping the facial expressions needed. I had to concentrate on what I was doing and forget about everything else around me!”
She also talked about landing the role of Hortensia.
“It was a very long process, due to Covid restrictions, [but] my first audition was just as an ensemble dancer,” she said. “A few weeks later they asked me to audition as Hortensia, then I had three more rounds of auditions. Then they finally picked me! I was so humbled, excited, and appreciative.”
