Actress Michelle Yeoh Claps Back At Ageism In The Industry With Inspiring “Oscars” Speech

“Ladies, don’t let anyone tell you…”

Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh has been an actor for nearly forty years and has been impactful enough to change people’s sexist beliefs about women in the entertainment industry. Like Jackie Chan‘s sexist thinking that “women belong in the kitchen rather than in action movies,” shattered by the time she “kicked his butt.” She’s now being recognized on a bigger scale courtesy of her film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

At the 2023 Oscars (also known as the 95th Academy Awards), Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Asian woman to win “Best Actress.” She also made history as the second woman of color to win in the category, over twenty years after actress Halle Berry, who happened to present the award to Michelle Yeoh.

Michelle Yeoh delivered an acceptance speech that inspired Asians to achieve their dreams and never let anyone place expectations on them. She then addressed the topic of ageism against women.

For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight. This is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof [to] dream big, and [that] dreams do come true.

— Michelle Yeoh

Because Michelle Yeoh is sixty years old and finally receiving the recognition she deserves, she reassured women there was no age limit to achieving dreams.

And ladies, don’t let anyone tell you you are ever past your prime. Never give up.

— Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh’s inspiring words went viral as she motivated women and clapped back at an industry where they’re discriminated against for being “too old” for acting roles.
