Tribute to Taylor Swift’s Late Grandmother During ‘Eras Tour’ Sparks Controversy with Swifties Online

Swifties in Nashville, Tennessee organized a tribute to Taylor Swift‘s late grandmother Marjorie during a recent stop on her Eras Tour. However, the decision is sparking a big controversy amongst fans online.

On Friday night (May 5), Taylor‘s fans pulled out photos of Marjorie as the 33-year-old singer performed the Evermore track named after her.

Taylor referred to the tribute as “so beautiful” in the moment and explained that her grandma was also a performer before she died.

While it appears that she appreciated the photos, Swifties online are wondering if it was in good form.

“What are you trying to do to me,” Taylor asked fans at the venue, according to Billboard. She added that her mom was probably “just like bawling” after the photos were pulled out.

Taylor said that it was “so meaningful and so special” to her. However, could she have had any other response? That’s the question some Swifties are asking, and they feel that surprising her with her late grandma’s photo might have been triggering for the pop titan.

“Everyone saying ‘taylor clearly liked it’ abt this…yall do realize that if taylor had reacted negatively at all, she’d be crucified for it?? like this put her in a weird position being in front of tens of thousands of people watching her,” one fan pointed out on Twitter.

Someone agreed with the tweet, writing that the decision was “so out of touch” and that they “feel so bad for [Taylor].”

“Given that this Marjorie is a now deceased family member of Taylor Swift, this is actually one of the most abhorrent things i’ve ever seen a fan do, i don’t even care if she appreciated it, how the f-ck does this go through your mind,” another Twitter user wanted to know.

Yet another concerned Swiftie wrote that they would “have a mental breakdown and throw my microphone at someone’s face” if they were in a similar situation.

Some fans wondered that it would turn into a contest to make Taylor cry during the performance with concert-goers constantly trying to one-up each other. One was even worried that it would cause the song to be pulled from the setlist.

“The ones who participated in #projectmarjorie were a different type of weird. You could’ve held up photos of your loved one who passed on as ‘your’ Marjorie. Not photos of a stranger. Taylor swift doesn’t know y’all. it’s like a contest of who can make her cry.. Just stop. Ew,” another user tweeted.

“Every time there’s a line, hardcore Swifties cross it. This is not even remotely okay, and it’s honestly kind of scary. Poor Taylor. 🥺 It’s one thing to be a fan, but it’s an entirely different thing to pretend you’re her close, personal friend. She deserves privacy and respect,” someone wrote.

Taylor was in Nashville for three shows, all of which were attended by celebs.
